Sony PS3 Motion Sensor Controller

After Microsoft announced their impressive Xbox Project Natal, it was Sony’s turn with their PS3 motion sensor controller, and after what I’ve read I feel very…….meh!!

Not that it doesn’t look impressive, but it’s nothing new. It seems exactly the same as Nintendo’s Wii remote and their Wii Motion Plus. Sony are boasting true 1:1 motion control and the video, which you can see below, really does make it look good, but again, it’s nothing new.

It looks like the Wii remote at this stage, but it is only a prototype so it could look a little different. But the prototype looks like it’s been put together by a child in my opinion. It’s a black Wii-mote with a great big purple ping pong ball on top.

The ‘ping pong ball’ is what’s used to send the signal to EyeToy to register your movements. So yes, you have to have Eye Toy to be able to use the new motion sensor. Whether they sell them both together is another question, but hopefully they will in a bundle at a reduced price.

Enough of the negatives, on the positive side, it does like it could be good fun. One of the demos shows the Sony guy using swords, tennis rackets, guns etc, and the possibilities of it has potential. Whether Sony will released AAA titles using the Motion Sensor is something else, and hopefully they will as I don’t want to see something like this go to waste and end up being just a gimmick.

Sony are feeling quite confident with their PS3 motion sensor controller by saying it surpasses anything on the market. Only time will tell when all three of the heavyweights go head to head. The motion sensor is due out in Spring 2010, so stay tuned for any further developments.
