Sony Charging For PS3 Downloadable Content (DLC)

sony-psn-logoI never knew this, but Sony are charging publishers for people downloading FREE content from the Playstation Network! Yet doesn’t apply to content you have to pay for. This all started on October 1st 2008.

I found this quite shocking as Sony are the only console giant to do so. Microsoft and Nintendo don’t charge which is apparently why downloadable content (DLC) is released on the Xbox 360 a whole week earlier than the PS3 so that the publishers can try and save a bit of money.

They don’t charge thousands of pounds per download, but still, at $0.16 per Gigabyte on each download made, it all adds up. So if a million downloads are made, that’s $160,000 that the publisher has to pay to Sony for people downloading their ‘FREE’ content.

But the ‘silver lining’ is that Sony only charge for the first 60 days from when the content is published on the PSN. Thanks Sony!

I find this to be a scandalous move from Sony, and I’m a little bit of a Sony fanboy too. My thoughts of buying an Xbox 360 seem more justified now, especially in the economic suicide the world is in at the minute.

So if you have both a Xbox 360 and a PS3, download your FREE content for FREE on the Xbox 360 and not the PS3 to save struggling publishers some cash that they shouldn’t have to pay out.

We’re all going to have to be pickier about what we download in the future on the PS3. That is until I get a Xbox 360.

Do you think Sony should charge publishers whilst Microsoft and Nintendo don’t? Let us know?

Bad Sony!!

I have to deal with the “Playstation Network” on my PSP and I, for one, can’t stand it. Sony seem to have an unmatched power to alienate consumers with a raw efficiency, matched only by.. well, you know who.. ;-)

Couldn’t give a damn about the publishers though.

EH you pay £40 or $60 per year more if you pay monthly for xbox live services

OK granted silver members can download content free but the gold members like me pay for the upkeep of the entire service.
this i am sure exceeds the minimal charge for DLC on PS3.
should Sony pay for SEGA games DLC i think not and if they did you would be paying a subscription for your service.
THEN THERE WOULD BE NO SILVER LINNING
KEEPING THE PLAYSTATION NETWORK servers running costs money someone has to pay so why not the developer who didnt iron out the bugs in the game prior to its release or think to put the extra content on the huge blueray disc to start with…….. Microsoft can only squeeze 9gb onto a regular dvd so the developers can moan and say its their fault for the DLC

Seriously “Artfulldog33″ since when did you get slapped with a stupid stick. Me being a proud owner of both console do not to spend time like you justifying a loosing argument. The 60$ for LIVE is more than a great deal. I can play 23hrs a day 365 days a year unlimited for 60$ a year. And download to my hearts content. And that is not a good deal. WOW charges 10$ a month (10$x12) per year and it’s the biggest MMO. How can LIVE not be concidered a good deal. Even by elementry math standards. I can even talk to famly in other countries unlimited which is cheaper than skype plus it has video conferencing. Stop trying to justify the purchase. PS3 is a good console but LIVE gaming is So far ahead that even if PS3 tried for the next 2 years it could not even come close to the LIVE experience.

    Same old same old…

Someone calls the ps3, someone defends it, someone slags off the one defending it…

    and vice versa…

    Nothing changes…

I can imagine people singing “my games machines better thank yours” just like little kids

Ohhhh it’s got “LIVE”. Big woopdy do. I get to play online for free. and as far as “downloading to your hearts content”, not everyone wants to download DLC. Look you can cut it up to be whatever you want, right, wrong, whatever. But what fits me and my opinion is the ps3, and playing online for free. If I want a DLC I’ll just pay for it, 10$ per DLC, which I’ll only get it if I really like the game, so say two DLC’s, that equals twenty, that’s a whole forty dollars cheaper…! -.- nice grammar btw.

Yeah, that artfulldog is a real loose argument huh?
And just because your opinion of PSN is bad, doesn’t mean it actually is bad. That’s like arguing if myspace or facebook is better, star wars or star trek… they both have their perks, they both have their fans, and they both have very big differences, but at the end of the day, if you argue the fact too much, your still a nerd.
