Sony BDP-S470 3D Blu-Ray Player Preview
Over the last couple of months, the world of 3D movies and TV has taken huge strides forward. The world’s first real 3D-ready TV’s have been launched as well as movies such as Avatar 3D taking it to the big screen in a hugely successful way. Well here’s a promising addition to the ongoing saga. The Sony BDP-S470 3D Blu-Ray Player. First shown at CES, the 3D-ready, Blu-Ray Player will be capable of playing 3D-ready Blu-Ray movies without any firmware updates. Talking of firmware updates, PS3 users are still waiting on their 3D update for the Playstation 3 console. Is this a step in the right direction as far as gaming as well as movies is concerned?
One of Sony’s biggest targets this year has clearly been to maintain the quality design of all of their products. This device does indeed continue that trend. Though minimalistic aesthetically, it is sure to be a perfect match for almost nay home theater set up due to the plain yet sleek design. As with the Sony BRAVIA 3DTVs also announced at CES, it follows the “monolithic design concept” which they say is a key feature of their home entertainment products for 2010.
In terms of features it has pretty much all that you would expect from such a device, plus a little bit extra. Obviously the key feature is the playback of 3D movies as well as the usual methods of playback from ordinary Blu-Ray players. As well as playing from optical media, the device is capable of playing back content from USB connected devices such as external drives, as well as streaming them across a network through the built in wireless connectivity.

This is certainly a good feature for anyone with a sufficient home theater set up as nobody really wants wires trailing around the house whilst relaxing and watching a movie. This built-in network also allows you to connect to and playback online content such as catch up TV services via BRAVIA internet video. This is certainly something which sets it apart from its competitors as it really makes it a whole lot more than just a Blu-Ray player. Another point worth mentioning is the ability to play back both DivX HD and MKV movie formats, something seldom found with such devices. You can also search through the GraceNote Database (as with iTunes), to find content from certain actors, directors genres etc. As you can tell, it is a massively versatile Blu-ray player.
For those of you with an iPhone or iPod Touch (or dare I say even an Apple iPad in future?), there’s an exclusive app available free from the app store which allows you to remotely control your content from the comfort of your arm chair. However, don’t fret if you have none of the above, as it also comes with a good old fashioned remote control to add to your collection!
So there we are. Apart from being a fantastic and stylish 3D/HD Blu-Ray player, the Sony BDP-S470 3D Blu-Ray Player is also packed with a whole host of other features which enhance the capabilities of your home theater system. It retails for a fairly modest $200 which will probably be around £200 once the taxes have been slapped upon it much to the dismay of every potential buyer.

$200 thats a great deal! although im going to stick with my ps3 as it can do most of that stuff already and save my money for that expensive 3D tv.
I have a PS3 as well, but I think if money wasn’t an object i’d rather have a dedicated blu-ray player
