You may have seen my earlier article on CoverScout, the app which can pluck all of your album artwork from the Internet and attach it to your tracks in iTunes. I mentioned SongGenie in there as an app which furthers the capabilities of CoverScout by adding in all of your track information. You do need both to make all of it happen.
The app is a simple one, it works very similarly to CoverScout by collaborating with your iTunes library and scouring the internet for all of the relevant song information such as Artist, Album, Track Numbers etc. and generally cleaning up your iTunes library. For me there is not a lot worse than seeing a list of tracks which are called ‘track 1’ etc. and this is the answer.
Song genie uses a clear interface which makes it extremely easy to use. It is extremely functional and takes no liberties. By this I mean, it works with you rather than for you. It suggests tracks for you to choose from rather than randomly applying everything it sees fit. This is useful as these apps do occasionally lapse into some mistakes. Mistakes could be irritating if you end up with a whole load of incorrect tracks that need manually fixing.
However, if you so choose you can have it do it automatically, if you place your trust in the app, after months of successful searching, then you can leave it all to the app, having it correct your tracks as you wish.
Other users have been impressed with the app too, it does have a quite impressive knack of being able to find the track information for some fairly rare tracks and albums. This was also true for me, although a lot of my music would be considered more popular than rare.
Overall, I am very impressed with the app and having completed my library so far, do not need to use it anymore. In the future I would like to have SongGenie integrated with CoverScout as they are both developed by the same people. It would make sense to have one app that corrected every issue with your songs, much like the Windows version of TuneUp.
However, on the whole SongGenie was an extremely useful app which saves a lot of time and effort. I really wouldn’t have wanted to sit there manually editing the information for hundreds of tracks. I would recommend this to anyone who is facing the same task and would like a workaround.
