Sky 3D TV Channel Launch Date Announced

Written by on March 23, 2010 · Filed under Tech

sky-3d-tv-logoSky 3D have announced that their brand new 3D channel will launch will indeed launch in 2010, in fact it’s not far way and will officially launch on 3rd April 2010 and it will be the first 3D channel in Europe. The first programme shown on the channel will be another 3D football game which will again be Manchester United but this time they will be facing Chelsea which will be a great game to start with as they’re both battling it out for the title.

Following the launch in April, Sky have said that there will be another 5 Premier League games to be shown before the end of the season as well as the Coca Cola League Play Offs. The 5 games have yet to be announced but hopefully they’ll spread them about so it’s not the same teams in 3D.

Sky 3DTV has been tested in selected pubs across the country in recent months, clearly from those initial trials, it’s all worked well and there’s a definite market for watching 3DTV. Especially since there’s already been over 1,000 pubs across the UK and Ireland that have signed up to show Sky 3D, so look out for pubs near you to see if you’ll be able to watch your football in 3D.

There doesn’t seem to be any programmes or films that are to be shown in 3D from launch, but they are due to be shown later in the year. But there will be a showreel which will broadcast the best of Sky 3D and cover a range of programmes from launch. This will run during selected hours throughout the day and will only be available to subscribers who have the top TV channels and the Sky HD channels package but surprisingly, Sky won’t be charging you for 3D if you have said packages.

This does annoy me though, as once again, Sky are only offering a good thing to people who spend lots of money on them. Even though I’m paying almost £40 a month to Sky for TV, telephone and Internet, I won’t have the option to watch Sky 3D in my home unless I fork out another fortune. Oh yeah! Don’t forget you’ll need a 3DTV to watch Sky 3D which will cost you around £2000.

Hopefully with the announcement of Virgin offering free HD channels, Sky might eventually drop their £10 a month charge for HD like they did with Sky+ recording, and make HD more widely available to more people who can’t afford the current costs, myself included.

Are you one of the lucky ones who’ll be able to watch the new Sky 3D channel on April 3rd? Are you looking forward to watching Avatar 3D in your own home? Or do you think 3DTV is taking things a little too far and it’s simply ahead of its time for home users right now? Either way, it’s going to be very expensive to watch. This is way cool, i’ve seen a 3 dimensional display set up for a football game in a local bar in town. Do you realise that backlight technology is holding back the set 4 3d home displays, they’ll cost an arm and a leg when they arrive but its all about the big companies.

I say be patient and wait for the greatest innovation for the couch potatoe since pringles extended their tube length.

    Awesome.
