Sky 3D Channels For Sky+HD Subscribers To Launch In October 2010
Here at Zath we’ve been covering the development of Sky 3D TV ever since it was first announced, Sky has announced that their Sky Sports 3D channel will launch on October 1st to all Sky+ HD customers. The timing of the launch coincides perfectly with this year’s Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, which will act as a sort of launch party for 3DTV in the UK. However, until October we will have to remain content with the events shown in 3D at selected pubs, which are few and far between.
Once the Golf is over though, Sky plans to offer Premier League football to customers in 3D, and other channels such as Sky Arts will begin preparing for the third dimension of television, in co-operation with the English National Ballet. Furthermore, and perhaps even more excitingly, they have also laid out plans to air 3D movies, such as Bolt, Monsters vs. Aliens, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince and more. Finally, there is something for the documentary fans, as Sky have commissioned a new film, ‘Flying Monsters’ presented by Sir David Attenborough.
Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s Chief Executive, said: “As with High Definition, 3D is set to transform the way TV is enjoyed in homes nationwide. Following hot on the heels of the success of 3D cinema, Sky customers will now be the first anywhere in Europe to experience 3D TV from the comfort of their living rooms. They can look forward to a fantastic mix of live sport, blockbuster movies, and innovative entertainment and arts shows.”
Any Sky HD subscribers who sign up to their full channel and HD package will be given access to the 3D channels at no extra cost for now, however I highly doubt it will remain that way forever. Clearly, you do have to own some of the latest 3DTV technology from manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic. If you comply with all the prerequisites you will have unlimited access to all the football, rugby union, cricket, rugby league, darts, movies, arts and documentaries that Sky decide to air on their new channels.
Richard Hills, the Ryder Cup director, said: “Following the success of Sky’s High Definition coverage we have followed the evolution of Sky’s 3D broadcasts with keen interest. We have been very impressed with Sky’s efforts to further enhance its coverage and are delighted that the Ryder Cup will be a part of TV history with the launch of Europe’s first 3DTV channel.”
So yet again we have come to a situation where Sky is innovating and pioneering the television industry in the UK, and pair this latest news with Sky’s deal with American broadcasters HBO to air a series of their greatest offerings, perhaps True Blood, as well as plans to unveil new services such as Anytime+, offering even more TV on demand, and to have 50 HD channels on their service by the new year.
I for one am extremely excited about the progress television is making, and based on the last few years shift from standard definition to high definition, it won’t be long before the many of us are enjoying 3DTV in our front rooms too.
