Ricky Gervais Podcasts
The Ricky Gervais Podcasts are very funny! Just like nearly everything he does, not much else to say…but I’ll try!
Ricky Gervais (who started off on the XFM radio station) is one of those comedians that you either love or hate from my experience of talking to various people - personally I think he’s great and have enjoyed watching him ever since he first started appearing on TV.
Ricky Gervais shot to fame when he created “The Office” TV show and starred in it as David Brent, the boss who desperately wanted to be liked and respected and thought of as cool by his employees. The documentary-style comedy was very good at highlighting everyday issues that you find working in an office environment. He followed that up with another great TV show called Extras which followed a struggling actor who worked as an extra who’s path crossed with number of “big stars” who all played comedic versions of themselves, sometimes to the extreme!
If you’ve never seen these shows, I implore you to give them a try, they are comedy genius!
Ricky Gervais has also been somewhat of a pioneer in the world of podcasting, sometimes referred to as the “Podfather”, he along with Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington started out recording some sponsored “Ricky Gervais Podcasts” for the Guardian newspaper. Due to the popularity in which those were received the three of them subsequently did 3 seasons of the Ricky Gervais Podcast, as well as some one-off specials.
The star of the show has to be Karl Pilkington who’s view on the world can only be described as unique! For example, take stick insects…nothing funny about that subject is there, well have a listen to the discussion Ricky, Steve and Karl have!
The Ricky Gervais Podcasts are now no more though as Karl Pilkington has said he doesn’t want to do anymore - however this isn’t enough to put of Ricky from tormenting Karl until he changes his mind! He’s now set up his own Karl Pilkington blog on his website called Ohhh!!! Chimpanzee That!!! Monkey News in which he documents what Karl is up to. Why does he do this? Just to annoy Karl as described below by Ricky:
Whenever Ricky phones him and asks what he is up to work-wise, Karl usually replies “nothin’ - no point”.
Karl refuses to do any further podcasts because he is “sick of people moaning”.
He still reads forums. Comments like “It’s definitely scripted” and “Karl is a character whose real name is Graham” have annoyed Karl so much that last week he told Ricky that he wishes he could turn the internet off to see their “stupid fuckin’ faces”.
Apparently they don’t like it when Karl swears either.
So with no more Pilkington available Ricky has decided to write a blog to report Karl’s every move. Ricky is doing this to annoy Karl. Karl recons Ricky will be bored in a week.
He is probably right.
So this being the case, we may not see any more Ricky Gervais Podcasts, well until Ricky annoys Karl enough to make him give in, so in the meantime, if you haven’t heard them before, then consider taking a listen to them, you can now get them through iTunes for a rather reasonable price of £3.95 per season!
Are you not convinced yet? You could start by listening to some of the guys earlier work on XFM, a London radio station, take a listen, there’s plenty more to be found on Youtube.
Have you heard the Ricky Gervais Podcasts before? Are you a fan? Which of his projects do you like the best?
