Preview of Speedball 2: ‘Missing Subtitle’

A couple of months ago now I mentioned that the Commodore Amiga classic ‘Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe’ was going to get a re-make for the current generation of machines. Well the first details have now emerged over at Eurogamer.

The main points that stood out for me are that they’re having a retro style game mode that mirrors the old game with its simple controls and viewpoint (topdown) while also having a new more challenging for today’s gamers, controllers and machines, including a more 3D view of the arena.

It’s certainly looking fairly good so far, hopefully this game will turn out well, if only for nostalgia value and not shattering my childhood memories!

The quote in my opinion that bodes well so far would be this:

Well, two main impressions.

1) It’s not Speedball 2 yet, in terms of polished playability. The player’s speeds are slightly misjudged. The sliding tackle doesn’t slide enough. The sense of HARD COLLISIONS BETWEEN STEEL-ARMOURED MEN isn’t quite there.

2) I couldn’t stop playing it.
