New Sonic The Hedgehog 2D Game Announced
I didn’t know this, but the Dreamcast is almost 10 years old. I probably didn’t know because I wasn’t a fan of the Dreamcast and neither were a lot of people which is probably why it did so badly and the reason why we haven’t seen a SEGA console since.
But it’s not all bad as it’s been announced that there is to be a new Sonic game released and it’s going back to the glorious 2D side scroller that made Sonic so popular. The graphics will of course be in HD, but I’m not getting too excited just yet.
The new Sonic is being made by Project Needlemouse and has been pencilled in for a release some time in 2010. It’s been built from the ground up it should be a brand new storyline, but I would like to see some areas reminiscent of the good old old skool Sonic days!! Judging by the Needlemouse teaser site, I think we’ll see something quite similar to the originals in parts.
I haven’t really played any of the Sonic games since the 2D versions, but the bits that I have played, I haven’t been impressed with as they seemed to be doing too much with them. I had a quick go on Sonic Unleashed but it never really amazed me and the whole werehog thing was a bit pointless in my opinion. In fact Sonic’s best outing recently has probably been Mario and Sonic Olympics for the Wii which wasn’t a true Sonic game by any means. It would be nice to add some small storyline developments to the game, but I think the core of it should stay true to the originals.
I really hope that this new 2D Sonic will live up to the hype it’s going to cause, and will hopefully lead to more in the series if it does. No news on whether this is going to be available on PSN/XBLA or in the shops, but keep an eye out for any more news.
Take a look at the teaser trailer below, are you excited by this news, or do you think it’s just going to be another Sonic flop? Let us know in the comments section.

I always thought the last great Sonic game was Sonic CD (same as the Dreamcast, I didn’t know any other Mega-CD owners either).
I really hope it will be back in the old vein of sonic games. If you’ve seen “Splosion Man” on XBLA, you can see how a “2-D” platformer can really come alive on modern hardware.
I really hope they don’t screw this one up..

I always liked playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog games as a kid, ever since the franchise tried to to make 3D games, they seem to lose something and they just weren’t as good.
Hopefully the good times can come back in a new 2D Sonic game!

And Sonic on the 360? Well it’s crap, of course.
I’m really hoping for something exceptional on XBLA here.

I think the game is codenamed Project Needlemouse, rather than that being the name of the developer. Wasn’t Sonic originally known as Mr Needlemouse?
Anyway, this game might be okay. Sonic really shouldn’t have gone 3D in the first place, so maybe this is the return to form fans have wanted for… well, for longer than Sega deserve people to have an interest in the character.
Re: Dreamcast… another matter entirely, but it basically failed due to developers’ fingers being burned by Mega-CD, 32X and Saturn. As a result, Sega were almost going it alone as software developers (other than Capcom, who made a valiant effort). Of course, the fans had been burned too.

You know what, Sega’s death as a console manufacturer still hurts. What a damn shame.
The 32X was bloody rubbish though!
