New PS3 Slim Is Official! – Preview Video
There was a lot of talk a few weeks ago about Sony releasing a slim version of the PS3 after releasing the PS3 80GB and PS3 160GB last year. A questionable image was leaked onto the internet and it looked like it could be a legitimate image. Well it was and the Sony PS3 Slim is real, and it’s been one of the worst kept secrets of the year.
Sony finally made the official announcement at Gamescom in Germany. The PS3 slim will be priced at £249 which is quite a nice price cut from the ‘Brick’ (which I’m now going to aptly name mine as) and will be available to buy from September 1st 2009 which is a whole 2 days before Japan!!
What’s new with the Slim? Not a great deal. You get all the features of the ‘Brick’ including WiFi and Bluetooth etc, but the PS3 Slim is 34 percent lighter and uses 34 percent less power. It also comes with an upgraded hard drive of 120GB.
The Slim measures at 290mm by 65mm by 290mm, so it’s squarer than the Brick. From what I’ve seen of the images it doesn’t look a great deal different from the original. It does look a bit slicker and it’s got a matte casing so it might not be as much of a dust or finger-print magnet of the Brick.
There are still 2 USB slots on the front with all the usual connections on the back. The DUALSHOCK 3 controller is put in with the console along with a USB cable for charging the controller, power cord and AV cable. I was surprised to see that there still isn’t a HDMI cable included, but they’re not that expensive to buy these days for a basic one, but you’re looking at about £30+ for the higher quality cables.
There is a neat little feature added, but only if you’ve got a Sony Bravia TV. If you connect your PS3 Slim to your Bravia using a HDMI cable, then you’ll be able to operate the XMB via your TV remote control using Sony’s Bravia Sync technology. I also found this quite fancy, but when you turn your TV off, your PS3 will turn itself off automatically. So don’t go and accidentally sit on your remote and press standby just as you’re about to make the best COD kill of your life.

I heard that Sony will be releasing a 250GB PS3 Slim soon, well that’s something worth looking forward to. I just hope that the later versions will still be able to play PS2 games coz I believe that PS3 Slim won’t =( Oh well, I just hope they release the 250GB version before Aion Online launches.

If nothing else, the new slim is easier to fit in already crowded equipment cabinets – Not sure if I’ll replace my older one for that reason or not. Maybe get a second one?
