New PS3 80GB

Playstation 3 - PS3Sony are set to release a new model of the Playstation 3. Instead of the cheap Playstation 3 40GB model now available, there will now be an 80GB model which will sell at the same price of £299.99.

Apparently the memory card slots and PS2 emulation will not be making a return on this new model, which is a shame. But I would have thought that this model will feature the new Dualshock Sixaxis controller that was released only a few weeks ago.

It would have been good if Sony had made the HDD size a bit bigger, maybe at around 120GB, the same as the XBOX 360 Elite. But in all fairness, I have the original 60GB model and have loads of trailers, demos, and games saved on mine, and I’ve only just gone under 30GB.

The new PS3 80GB is set to be released on 27th August 2008 in Europe.

It’s a shame that the 80GB PS3 doesn’t have backwards compatibility but soon PS2 games will be dead.

I think it’s a shame the backwards compatibility has gone, but as Harvey says, sooner or later you have to move on – if you want to play PS2 games so much, play them on a cheap PS2 console?

I’ve just submitted a formal complaint about the continued disregard that Sony is showing to UK customers.

I bought a PS 2 during its first two weeks of release and it subsequently damaged all my disks and DVD’s and eventually packed up altogether. That was because the first run had a bunch of defective components in it, which were replaced by more reliable ones. I believe later PS 2’s can be identified by having one fewer or one more screws in the bottom of the case. One fewer I think. Sony admitted liability to me, and even though it was out of its 12 month warranty, they gave me a new one from a later run for a mere £80. Good on Sony for that.

So, clever me thought I’d wait for the second or third run of the PS 3 before I bought one. Then Sony ditched the one with backwards compatibility and the decent external peripherals and haven’t bought it back since, despite America, Japan and probably most other countries getting a decent version.

I’d spitting mad at Sony for treating loyal UK customers like second class citizens time after time after time, and not giving us a PS 3 that has all the capabilities it’s possible to fit on it. An 80 gig hard drive is a good start, but it needs to have the other capabilities of the UK 60 gig version besides.

Will Sony bother to listen to my plea? Highly unlikely. I don’t imagine they give a damn for what I, or the other ex-Playstation customers think. Given that I owned by a PS 1 and PS2, plus 50 or so games for each and a stack of peripherals and different game pads, I think they damn well ought to though. I am sick of getting shoddy, third rate versions of this console and I won’t buy one until they get their act together. Given how badly Sony handled the launch of the PS 3 anyway, it really is time that they should.

I’m not buying a PS3 until I can get one with backwards compatibilty. Simple as that. Might never buy one at this rate.

Backwards compatability! ps2 games look stoneage in comparison to ps3 games on large hd tv’s, and i havent even looked at my ps2 games in over a year (since i got my ps3!) and there are enough good ps3 games to keep the most hardcore gamers happy. the only good thing to come out of this 80gb model is the dual shock controller, as people who want a bigger hard drive than 40gb change them for much larger drives anyway, you can pick up a 250GB sata for £27 on amazon now so the fact that sony have announced a 160gb for £350 coming out in oct is a bit of a rip off unless they bundle some serious games and extra controller
