New Amazon Kindle DX ‘Graphite’ With Lower Price Announced

amazon-kindle-dx-graphiteIt’s been a big week for Amazon. They’ve already lowered the price point of the Kindle 2 to $189 and released their free Kindle Android application, leaving the Kindle DX looking awfully expensive compared to the rest of their line up.

It then shouldn’t come as much surprise then, to hear that the Kindle DX is also receiving a refresh, as well as a price drop to match (on both the new dark-grey/graphite colour model and tradiitional white Kindle DX).

Now available in a Graphite finish, you can pre-order the new Amazon Kindle DX wherever you are in the world at just $379 compared to the $489 price point the previous model demanded. It sports a higher contrast e-ink screen, still 9.7″ in size, and is 1/3 of an inch thick.

“There’s no turning back once you read on our beautiful new Kindle DX screen,” said Steve Kessel, senior vice president, Amazon Kindle. “With 50 percent better contrast and darker fonts, you’ll find it easier than ever to read wherever you happen to be, whether it’s outside in bright sunlight or under the low light of your living room. We’re excited to offer the new Kindle DX with free 3G wireless at the lower price of $379.”

The new, lower price is certainly the major news here, although this new Kindle DX also features an improved E-Ink display technology with 50% improved contrast for clearer and sharper presentation of text and images. In addition to that, the screen retains the 9.7″ size of the previous DX and has all the usual Kindle features that you’ve come to expect from the recent Kindle software updates.

When we told you about the Kindle 2′s lower price point earlier in the week, I mentioned how crucial it was for people to be able to buy the device at an affordable price. After all, the business model of the Kindle is based on users purchasing content from the online store, not purchasing physical Kindle’s (although I’m sure Amazon are making a tidy profit there too).

It’s the reason that they want to make sure that whatever device you have, be it an iPad, an Android device or a Kindle, you can still buy your e-books from the Kindle store – you’d actually think they could possibly afford to use the business model of practically giving away the Kindle hardware devices, losing money up-front to create a large market base to make money from in the longer-term purchasing of content, perhaps that will come in future.

Regardless of that possible future for the Kindle platform, if the new lower price point and graphite look makes you want one, the good news is that you can pre-order the updated Amazon Kindle DX (Graphite) from today and they will begin shipping them out on the 7th July.
