MusicDNA – MP3’s Possible Premium Successor?

I don’t think I need to point out how fast the tech world moves, and that for every new piece of technology there will be one to replace it and the music industry epitomises this brilliantly: LPs, Tapes, CDs and now MP3s. But some of the people who worked on MP3 have come up with what could prove to be the successor: MusicDNA.

In a step up from MP3’s which just contain the music (and a little bit of information about the artist, track title etc) MusicDNA will allows for a whole host of different types of related data to be carried in the same file as the music, things such as lyrics, videos, artwork and blog posts.

The main creator of this new format was Dagfinn Bach who in fact worked on the first MP3 player back in 1993, and one of the major investors is Karlheinz Brandenburg who is accredited with inventing MP3, so there is a real feel of continuity with this step forwards in technology.

But don’t start getting excited yet: although MusicDNA has a couple of labels to its name there are no major ones as of yet, and it will be in direct competition with Apple’s iTunes LP which as well as offering a host of similar content also has the benefit of a massive iTunes platform to build from, which unfortunately MusicDNA does not.

That is not to say that it won’t be successful as it does look very promising. Perhaps the best part of this new format will be the fact that they will dynamically update allowing you easy access to the latest information.

As Mr Back said “… it will be dynamically updatable so that every time the user is connected, his file will be updated… We can deliver a file that is extremely searchable and can carry up to 32GB of extra information in the file itself”

So when will we be able to have a look at this new format? A beta version will be released this spring and providing it is successful there should be a full roll out at the end of the summer. Admittedly it doesn’t roll of the tongue quite as well, but MusicDNA could well be the new MP3?
