‘Monster Hunter Freedom Unite’ Preview (PSP)

monster-hunter-freedom-ignite-logoCapcom have announced that there is to be another Monster Hunter game to be released on the Sony PSP later this year.

This time with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. It’s not exactly a new game, but more of an updated version of Monster Hunter 2, with added monsters and areas to explore. There are around 8 new monsters to track down and your inventory has also been upgraded to allow you to carry more items when hunting, 99 of each item to be precise. New areas include places such as the ‘Old Forest’.

In the previous game, it seems you had to go back to the Village to get rid of your items when you were getting too many, but apparently you can send them straight back whilst in the battlegrounds, which will save time trekking back and forth.

The game looks visually stunning for a heldheld console and shows what the PSP can achieve. The gameplay is apparently exactly the same as Monster Hunter 2, so those who have played it in the past will be able to jump straight back into the Monster Hunter world.

You can play the game in either Single Player or Multiplayer mode, but the Multiplayer is Ad Hoc only, which unfortunately means that you need mates who all have a PSP to play it with. It would be good if you were able to play this game online with the rest of the world in massive battles against stupidly big (but cool looking) monsters.

There’s also the benefit of installing the game straight onto your memory stick to decrease the load times and give the game a more fluidity instead of stop, load, fight, load etc. You need roughly 500MB free on your memory stick, but even if you need a bigger card, you can pick them up cheap enough nowadays.

I’ve never played the originals but have heard of how big they are, especially in Japan, and after looking into the game a bit more, and looking at the trailer, I am intrigued into the game and trying it out for myself. Surely a game with this much hype is worth a play? Have you ever played Monster Hunter and what are your views on it?
