Mobile Phone Directory Service Temporarily Suspended (118 800)
Written by Simon Barker on July 11, 2009 · Filed under Tech
We recently covered the news of privacy concerns over a mobile phone number directory that was being launched by that the directory service 118 800 – there are certainly good and bad points about such a service.
Although, ultimately if you weren’t happy with your mobile phone number being listed, perhaps due to the idea of privacy issues, maybe you have a rather persistent ex-partner you’d rather not hear from or the potential of marketing companies using the information leaves you a little uneasy.
However, I somewhat doubt the actual possibility of being “spammed” by cold-calling companies trying to sell you things – would it really be worth the trouble of trying to get in contact? Would it be worth their while to go to that much trouble? They’d almost be better off dialling random mobile numbers?
Anyway, 118 800 does provide a simple method to have your number de-listed so that you’re removed from their mobile phone directory service.
In recent days, the 118 800 directory service has had to take down their mobile phone number directory service temporarily due technical issues they’ve encountered due to the high demand that they have received since going live.
We’ve been informed that if you’ve already submitted a requested to be de-listed (made ex-directory) then you don’t need to do it again as all requests will be actioned once the service is back up and running.
118 800 apologies for any inconvenience this has caused callers and will release a further statement once the service is up and running at full capacity.
Clearly there’s been a very high demand for people using this mobile phone number directory service, I wonder if these issues have been caused by the sheer volume of people trying to find other people or perhaps more likely it’s the number of people wanting to opt-out?
Would you want your number listed even if people could not contact you directly? Remember that 118 800 don’t give people your number, rather transfer the call through to your mobile phone – surely the privacy issues are somewhat limited, although I’m not sure if I’d still want random people calling my mobile – more than I already have which is enough of a nuisance!

Hi Neil from 118800.co.uk here
Thanks for talking about 118800, please find some further information.
The website is currently unavailable while we improve the service we offer our customers. All ex-directory requests made prior to the 10th of July are being processed and we will be taking ex-directory requests again once the website is back up and running, which will be as soon as possible.
You will be able to do this free of charge from the website or by calling us on a low charge number from the phone you wish to make ex-directory.
We recommend you check whether you are in the directory first before taking the time to become ex-directory.
118800 connect people that know each other, we don’t give out numbers to anyone.
We don’t sell data to anyone, so cold calling will not result from our service. Cold calling is common on landline numbers because landline data is freely and widely available. The mobile numbers in our directory are available to no one. 118800 connect people that know each other, we don’t give out numbers.
