Microsoft’s CES Press Event – HP Slate & Xbox 360 News (CES 2010)

After much hype running up to Microsoft’s press event at CES yesterday evening, (it took place at 6PM Pacific, 2AM GMT) there wasn’t much to shout about, although there was one interesting product revealing in the form of the HP Slate.

Referring to the HP Slate, Steve Ballmer said that the device is “more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC. Perfect for reading, surfing the web and taking entertainment on the go”. It runs Windows 7 and is fully touch screen operated, sporting various modes that allow the user to watch movies, use the device as an e-book or a regular PC. It certainly looks impressive, but however they market the Slate it’s still not the Courier that everyone was hoping for!

As well as showing off HP’s new tablet computer, Microsoft also had a little surprise for owners of the Xbox 360 in the US, allowing AT&T U-Verse subscribers to use their game consoles as a set top box, which is a nice feature to stream the internet service through. There was also confirmation that Project Natal’s release date will Holiday 2010 which pretty much ties in with our previous thoughts of a November 2010 release.

Finally, the Xbox Live game room was announced as expected, promising to give Xbox 360 users an ‘old school arcade experience’ by spring.

All in all, the event was a somewhat underwhelming press event from Microsoft, but once we get some hard specs of the HP Slate (which we will have soon) things may get a little interesting, so watch this space!

I agree, I’m waiting until the end of the month to see if Apple release their tablet – might get it at the same time as the Nexus One comes to the UK in a few weeks!

I am much excited about Project Natal and believe that Microsoft will totally take over the gaming industry with it. Sony and Nintendo has to wither come up with something similar soon or start thinking of a good way to sue Microsoft.

I will wait for the courier – it will fit into my life so much better.
