LucasArts Announce Classic Game Re-Releases Via Steam

lucasarts-logoAs you can probably tell from reading the Tales of Monkey Island preview I wrote the other day, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of the first chapter/episode of this five part series of Monkey Island goodness, and then this morning I read about how and when we can expect to see the Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition released – oh yeah and just a bunch of other games too!

Basically I found this information from seeing the guys over at LucasArts tweeting about it on the @LucasArts Twitter account, another example of how Twitter can be a great way of finding out information about things that you’re interested in.

Anyway, what did the LucasArts guys announce? They basically announced the following in a series of tweets:

“So lets see who will be happy: LucasArts has partnered with Steam. Digital adventurey goodness.”
“Last Crusade, Loom, The Dig, and more – http://bit.ly/YvVgI – For an old school gamer like myself, this is massive news. Excited!”
” Battlefront 2? On PC? You request it? Sure, lets throw that in too. Republic Commando is a personal favorite. Lets put that one in too.”
” And hey – who wants to buy Monkey Island Special Edition on Steam and XBLA next week? the 15th? Sure, lets do that for you as well.”
” And this is just the beginning. We know how much you guys love our old games. This little announcement is just a start. #LECSteam”

Definitely, a more casual, informal and interactive way of announcing gaming news, that’s for sure, if somewhat surprising – I’d been expecting a Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition release date announcement (which will be available from 15th July 2009) on the Steam digital game distribution platform, but hadn’t thought that we’d be seeing any other classic LucasArts games being released in a digital format.

At this stage, only the Secret of Monkey Island has had the “Special Edition” treatment of improved graphics, sound and interface, but hopefully assuming that is a commercial success for LucasArts, then they will commission more special editions of more of our old favourites – I personally would love to see Monkey Island 2, Day of the Tentacle and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but for the time being we’ll have to make do with playing the classics in retro style, here’s the full list games that you’ll be able to get through Steam:

  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • LOOM
  • The Dig
  • Armed and Dangerous
  • LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
  • Star Wars Battlefront II
  • Star Wars Republic Commando
  • Star Wars Starfighter
  • Thrillville: Off the Rails
