LoveFilm Movie Streaming Coming Soon To Your Playstation 3

It was announced last week that the film rental company LoveFilm, will be heading on to the Sony Playstation 3 console from next month.
A video was published on the PS3 YouTube channel and just as quickly taken off, but enough was seen to show people that Lovefilm will be heading this way in autumn and will allow users to download films straight to their PS3.
I signed up for Lovefilm a good 18 months since, and think it’s definitely money well spent, especially since there are no late fees allowing you to watch your films at your leisure. But of course you have to return your current discs to receive a new film through your letterbox. The deliver service is incredibly fast so you only wait a couple of days to receive your film.
There’s already a movie rental service available on the PS3 via the Playstation Network (PSN), but the top HD films alone can cost £4.49 to rent, which is peanuts to be honest. However, Lovefilm might be doing better packages or prices for single downloads which could be better than the PSN rental service. So does this mean that Lovefilm will be replacing the PSN service or running along side it?
Either way LoveFilm will be a nice addition to the PS3 in the same way that US PS3 owners have the Netflix movie streaming, no doubt this will probably have me spending even more money on my PS3 than I have in the past on PSN rentals. No doubt there will be free trials for people who haven’t signed up to Lovefilm yet so they can see if it’s worth them parting with their cash.
So this combined with the recent news of the Playstation 3 getting the ITV Player catch-up service and of course the fact that the PS3 is probably still the best Blu-Ray player out there, means Sony are certainly trying to ensure that people use their console as a media consumption device as well as just for playing games. Who needs to get a separate HD set top box if you have a powerful and quiet media centre device under your TV in the form of the PS3?
What do you think to this LoveFilm movie streaming coming to the PS3? Are you already signed up to Lovefilm and like the idea? Or are you still a Lovefilm virgin, but enticed by the idea of digital rentals? Let us know in the comments below.

I was late coming to the Love Film party, joining when a friend had a free trial to pass on. I’ve now signed up ongoing as the service was excellent. As you say, the delivery turn-around is very fast and the whole process is really easy. While I know some people won’t like being able to specify exactly what they get, in our house it adds some excitement to see what film we’re going to get next (although the kids are planning to mutiny against me making the wish list).
Streaming to the PS3 or any device linked to the TV could be good. I’m not keen on using the streaming to PC service. I bought a big LCD TV for a reason – the quality just won’t be as good on a PC or laptop screen.
