Little Big Planet Dominates D.I.C.E. Summit
A couple of weeks back we had a look at the nominations for the Gaming BAFTAs (Part One and Part Two) but like the movie and TV BAFTAs they are not alone in handing out awards, and at the D.I.C.E. summit which started in Las Vegas yesterday the Interactive Achievement Awards were handed out to the winners of a staggering 30 categories.
The D.I.C.E. summit for those of you who don’t know is an annual gathering of videogame executives which focuses more on the business and production end of the industry, as you would expect from a conference full of executives! Amongst the keynote speech and various addresses the Entertainment Software Association take the opportunity to give out their games awards: the IAAs.
The summit itself has been a success, and the same can be said for the IAAs with comedian Jay Moer injecting some much needed humour into the ceremonies proceedings. Having mocked Richard Garriott and his failure of a MMORPG Tabula Rasa he moved onto Fallout 3, suggesting that 100 hours gameplay is perhaps a little too much.
Anyhow onto the awards, which not only hold their own certain prestige but also give a good indication as to who can expect to see winning BAFTAs. Unfortunately the fact that you have to pay an entrance fee for the awards means you do not see many of the unknown games in there which in turn means fewer surprises.

As the title suggests Little Big Planet was very successful and managed to win a grand total of 8 awards for Family Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Outstanding Character Performance, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Console Game of the Year and, most importantly, Overall game of the year.
The other two multiple winners were Left 4 Dead who picked up Computer Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play, and Fallout 3 which collected Outstanding Achievement in Original Story and Best Role-Playing Game.
So not only will Media Molecule, the people behind Little Big Planet, be filling up their mantelpiece but they will also be leaving space for the BAFTAs on March 10th where they are in with a chance of winning the Artistic Achievement, Casual, Original Score and Use of Sound awards all of which they are in with a good chance of winning.
