Lego Universe Preview (Lego Online Game)

There has been a Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Racer, Lego Soccer Mania and a Lego Rock Band. It seems like the Lego characters are making there way into every game genre. There latest game, Lego Universe is to be released later this year, is a Lego online game, specifically a massively mutiplayer online (MMO) game developed by NetDevil. The game is a highly ambitious title aimed towards kids. I wonder why they just didn’t go ahead and make a Lego World of Warcraft?

The objective of the game is to join together with other players across the world and help the Lego Universe battle a dark force known as the Maelstrom. The Maelstrom has come to rid the world of imagination and it’s the player’s job to stop that from happening.

The game looks very approachable and easy to get into. Everything from the beginning seems to be interactive, for example the Lego characters will watch your cursor and cover their eyes when you’re typing your password.

Before jumping into the game you create a character, just like in every MMO, however everything is a lot more light hearted and fun as it’s a Lego game. You can change the tops, bottoms, face type and add in a quirky haircut.

In the tested version the gameplay looks very similar to the Star Wars, Batman and the Indy series. The Lego men can run, double jump and smash just about anything. This is great because this was the reason I personally loved the previous games.

There are two main types of collectables. They are imagination spheres that act as your character’s statistics and Lego parts, which are used to build anything. The more imaginations you have, the more interesting and bigger the models can become. Like in the previous game, there are a number of broken Lego piles that are there to be built up and once built gives the player some achievement rewards.

The game has a series of mini games like racing and shooting. One of the most interesting parts of the game is the ability to own your own property in the Lego Universe. You can create your own home using all the Lego parts you have collected during the game.

This is how the game’s cycle is played. You play the missions collecting imagination experience and Lego parts. You then build what you can with what you have and go back to the mission.

The game looks fun. I feel like it’s essentially like every other Lego game but bigger. If that is the case, I don’t necessarily see that being a bad thing, anyway take a look at the recent Lego Universe demonstration videos from the CES 2010 event and let us know what you think to this Lego online game!
