IPTV – TV On The Internet Is Coming!
Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is one way of having TV on Internet. The TV programming is delivered over broadband to your computer or TV. This could normally be done using a separate box connected to your TV for instance, however later this year there will be another option – high definition TV on Internet is streamed through your cheap Xbox 360!
There’s a couple of very informative videos over at GameDrift and Gizmodo that help to demonstrate the power of this IPTV system.
Some of the key features that this system will offer include:
- High Definition TV and digital recording.
- Play on Xbox Live while recording a TV show in the background.
- Watch TV through your Xbox 360 while chatting to your online friends.
- Instant channel surfing.
- Video on demand services.
- A rich and responsive user interface.
So far, this has mainly been talked about with the US market in mind, however this will hopefully be coming to UK as well. Eurogamer has reported that BT are involved here in the UK. I just hope BT can ensure our country’s broadband network is up to the job of delivering a service like this which I think looks very cool indeed.
It further indicates Microsoft’s efforts to win the living room entertainment battle with Sony! No wonder that the new Xbox 360 Elite model to be released comes with the 120GB hard disk and HDMI connection to help you to watch TV on Internet!

Yeah it does, although I think that Sony as very occupied in pushing their Blu-Ray discs. I sometimes wonder if Microsoft only backed HD-DVD in the first place to distract Sony fighting that battle against Toshiba, while Microsoft was actually working towards a potential successor to Blu-Ray in IPTV and high definition movie downloads.
