If you were holding out until June to bag yourself an iPhone 5, then you may be out of luck for this year. Business Insider has reported that FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger is predicting that the upgrade of the iPhone 4 may launch in September of this year, rather than the usual time of June or July.
If the predictions are accurate, it would be the first time since the launch of the first iPhone back in 2007 that we haven’t seen a refresh of the popular smartphone in either June or July. So instead of us being able to get our hands on Apple’s latest mobile phone for the summer, we’d end up having a whole summer of “Apple Waiting” until we can get the next upgrade!
Berger writes, “For the iPhone 5, we continue to hear that a July launch is unlikely, with various casing suppliers and touch suppliers still ramping up, with some chip vendors not having yet received firm iPhone 5 orders, and with other sockets like the image sensor (most likely going to Omnivision exclusively, but with some potential for Sony to split that socket) still in flux. Given these factors, we think a September launch is more likely, off from Apple’s traditional iPhone launch schedule, but giving the firm more time to enhance its next-generation instant communications on the phone.”
There are many possible reasons for the delay of the iPhone 5’s arrival. The iPhone 4 has suffered from so called ‘antennagate‘ issues since its release last summer, where the phone may lose signal if held a certain way by the user. Apple may be taking extra time in ensuring no such issues are present in the antenna of the new iPhone, with the possibility of a new internal design to enhance signal strength.
In addition to this, sales of the iPhone 4 will undoubtedly be far higher at this stage in its life cycle than that of any previous models which have been on the market, following the introduction of the smartphone on the Verizon network in the USA. With interest still well and truly present in the current version Apple may well be milking the device for all it can, pushing more units until the updated version is released. Verizon customers who purchase the iPhone 4 in the coming months would also be incredibly disappointed if a brand new version was to come out just a few months after their purchase. Giving consumers an extra few months would certainly increase their satisfaction.
It is also possible, however strange it may seem, that Apple wants to ensure that they will be able to ship a white iPhone 5 to customers on the launch date in summer or autumn. The white iPhone 4 is still absolutely nowhere to be seen after numerous promises from Apple saying that it will arrive just a few months after the initial release of the black iPhone 4. Considering how many people there are using white iPhones which were released prior to the iPhone 4, it’s clear that it’s a popular choice for the consumer. Apple may not like giving customers too much control over what they do with their products, but surely it can manage to give us a choice of two colours this time. Please?
