iPhone 3G PAYG

iphone-3gThe iPhone 3G has now gone on sale on Pay As You Go (PAYG) in the UK on the O2 network, this is great news for those people who don’t like being tied to a long contract (18 months in the case of the iPhone 3G) and also for people like me who already have a contract, it opens up the market for more potential customers for the iPhone 3G and O2.

When the original iPhone was released last year, I have to admit that I wasn’t overly impressed by it due to some of its limitations – no 3G, no GPS, a poor camera, reports of poor signal reception due to the metal back on it. Sure it had a great innovative touchscreen interface, but like many things from Apple in my experience, you’re often better off not getting the first generation of a product as an updated model seems to come along quite quickly.

This was the case with the iPhone, with the updated version being called the iPhone 3G (for obvious reasons), bringing the potential performance of broadband internet speeds to what is essentially one of the best mobile internet devices out there. There’s also built-in GPS (to make your Google Maps navigation more accurate) and the iPhone’s casing is now plastic to aid better signal reception. These improvements coupled with the huge functional extendibility that the Apps Store brings to download programs onto your iPhone, now makes it a real tempting proposition.

In terms of capacity, there are two versions of the iPhone 3G that are available at the following prices on PAYG, both of which include 12 months of unlimited internet access:

8GB = £349.99 – Buy it now!
16GB = £399.99 – Buy it now!

Depending upon how much you actually use your mobile for calls/texts, those PAYG prices could compare favourably to having a contract to get an iPhone, I was especially pleased to see that you get unlimited internet access for a year included in those prices – admittedly after the first 12 months, you’ll need to top up with at least £10 per month to keep that free unlimited internet access!

I think that this is a real tempting offer now, especially if you’re looking to get an iPod anytime soon as this will do the job as well, the only thing I’d question is how long the battery might last with intensive use?

What do you think to this iPhone 3G PAYG deal? Do you think it’s a better deal than the contract option? Is it worth considering? Would you get the iPhone 3G rather than any other PAYG mobile phone?

    I recently got mine, got it unlocked and love the pant’s of it! Though the keyboard on the touch screen is really tiny for even the average persons fingers. Though like anything which is like this with the pro’s their will always be the cons too. A lot of us are used to the feel of a normal phone being able to touch the buttons etc. This just don’t feel like a mobile phone.

    Though I still bloody love it! hehe

    Thats great news indeed, Zath! In fact, I heard Apple is doing the same in Hong Kong which would invariably flood the Chinese market where there are talks of selling iPhone’s with no 3g, no gps, etc… pretty much a crippled iPhone 3g!

    I’m still really tempted to get one of these iPhone 3G on PAYG because I’ve got another 9 months on my current contract, but use the Internet most on my mobile, yet my current contract has limited internet access.

    Still not sure about the iPhone typing given I’ve got big, chubby fingers, but the unlimited internet access is very appealing!
