Facebook Vanity URL Names – A New Land Rush?

If you can remember back to the time when everybody used MySpace (yes, it was a while ago…) then you will probably recall that everybody had individual “vanity URLs”, and it was through these that people easily found each other.

However Facebook have finally cottoned on to the fact that it was a good idea and have decided to introduce a username scheme that will not only allow you to have your personalised vanity URL for your Facebook profile, but it will also be used in, according to Facebook, “numerous other ways”.

Consisting of at least five characters (alphanumeric or full stop) the ability to register your http://www.facebook.co.uk/username will become available on 12:01am EDT on Saturday June 13th, so if you really want your name (and it happens to be John Smith) then I’d get there quickly as they’ll probably be gone pretty quick in this Facebook vanity URL land rush.

To stop people from getting a load of names this will only be available to accounts that are already open and active, and you will also need to be careful about what you choose because they will not be able to be changed after selection.

However this news shouldn’t really be surprising – firstly it is a good idea, and secondly some companies already have the privilege of personalised pages (such as HTC at www.facebook.co.uk/HTC). However as vain as having your ‘own’ URL may be at least Facebook decided not to charge for them, as certain rumours that were going around suggested, which is a good move on their part!
