Escape From City 17 (Half Life 2 Video)
Anyone who has played the Half Life games will know how they combine great gameplay with a good story narrative, particularly in Half Life 2 and the subsequent episodic installments we’ve got so far – with the in-game engine being used to great effect to create cut-scenes and create an immersive experience.
That being the case, the Half Life 2 has also spawned lots of mods that people have created using the game engine, even Valve have used it to create other games like Portal and Left 4 Dead, however now a clever bunch of film makers have used the Source engine to create their own low-budget Half Life series of videos.
Unlike the usual kind of films being made by games players (Machinima), in this case the guys clearly have some real computer effects talent as they have taken in-game elements from the Half Life 2 gameworld and integrated them into live-action footage that has been filmed in very convincing locations.
‘Escape From City 17′ is just the first of a multi-part series of short-films being made by Purchase Brothers, pretty good stuff given that they’ve done this on a budget of just $500 and I look forward to seeing the rest of them. This shows a lot of potential for the Half Life franchise and I’m now thinking Hollywood could potentially make a great TV series out of Half Life – but of course the chances of that happening would be practically non-existent given Valve have already turned down the option of a Half Life movie.
