Cheap Playstation 3 (PS3)?
The Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) console was expected to have a price drop at some point, everyone’s looking to buy a cheap PS3, but who would have thought you would be seeing the PS3 console dropping in price from the UK launch price of £425 to a cheap bargain starting price for Sony PS3 console bundles at around £300 just 6 months later!
One of the reasons I suspect for this will be the comparatively high cost of the Sony PS3 console since it’s launch in comparison to it’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii console rivals which are both outselling it. The reported sales of the PS3 console in the UK and how they fell since the launch week was something that was discussed here on the Zath – I think it was because the launch price was anything but cheap!
Now I’m quite happy with my cheap Xbox 360 console for the time being (well I’m finding it tough enough to get time to play on that as well as my PC as well as everything else going on in my life), but at this cheap price even I’m considering it, if only to buy it as the cheapest option of getting a Blu-Ray High Definition movie disc player given that Blu-Ray won the format war!
Tempting, very tempting indeed at these relatively cheap prices! How much better is the Blu-Ray disc playing in comparison to cheaper up-scaled DVDs option on your High Definition TVs? Would you recommend getting a cheap PS3 console just to play your movies?
Recently Sony released new versions of their console which feature larger hard disks – PS3 80GB and PS3 160GB.
Has it become cheap enough in price for you to buy one?

I think I am going to buy one, my 360 hasnt got hd, and rather than buying and external hd for xbox I think a little more investment and you get a lot more.

It seems to me that would have more to do with Bargain discount shopping than just about anything else. Regards! please give a little more detail for us \’dunderheads\’.

I’m thinking the 40GB version is rather tempting, I may have to treat myself to one for Christmas!
Apparently the 40GB version doesn’t play old Playstation 2 games – for me that’s not a big deal, “been there, done that”, I’m more interested in the Playstation 3 high definition games and bluray movies!

I got my PS3 back in October, so its the 60GB model and I think it was a little over the £400 mark, and I have to say it was definitely worth it. Everyone thinks that the XBOX 360 and the PS3 are comparable in some way in gameplay, but for me I find there is very little difference. I’m rather glad that I got the PS3 when I did as although I don’t use the backwards compatibility of PS2 much, it still comes in handy. Although I overheard a sales guy in Zaavi, virgin music previously, that they had taken the 60GB model off the market due to bugs in the PS2 gameplay, which I then told him and the woman asking about it that I had found no bugs and reffered her to argos where it was cheaper for the 60GB model than Zavvi’s 40GB.
Anyways, I’m rambling as I’m tired. Have a great Christmas everyone and have fun with your PS3’s if you get them.

@edd – Interesting to hear another view on the PS2 compatibility of the PS3, I’m not sure that I’d use it as I tend to leave old games behind (and sell them if possible) once I upgrade to PS3, but I’m sure it a nice feature to have though.

ps3’s are starting to become worthwhile purchases. Now might be a decent time to pick one up if you were on the bench.

The PS3 is awesome. It really is a great system games like Rachet and Clank, folklore, and motor storm are great. Online playing is free.
I also have it hooked up to a 1080p monitor with a big denon lossless receiver, and Blu Ray is unbelievable. Best consumer video source I’ve ever seen. PS3 also upconverts regular DVDs, but one look at Casino Royale and you can know which is which.
I’d recommend going for NetFlix though for blu ray discs since they are a bit much to buy right now.

Cliff – I’m sure the PS3’s fortunes will further pick this year as more top games are released (GTA 4, Metal Gear Solid 4) and given the fact that Bluray has now won the format war, the cheapest PS3 will no doubt be a bargain way of owning a Bluray player!
The cheapest Playstation 3 is now looking an ever more tempting piece of kit!

I really don’t think any price drop for the PS3 is in the near future. For the 3ghz and blue-ray drive, it’s a steal at $399. IMO

I agree that if you want a Blu-ray player, a Playstation 3 is the best and probably cheapest on the market now that Blu-Ray stand-alone players are going up in price now they don’t have to compete with HD-DVD on price!
Also, there should start being more top class games arriving for the PS3 this year, which should be good!

Yes definitely I too agree that Xbox 360 is far better in terms of everything as compared to PS3. I also don’t think any price drop for the PS3 is in the near future.

Even with the price drop in playstation3’s it is still not worth getting. Because after the paying for the ps3 you then have to pay for the games the cheapest being between 40 and 50 quid, blu-ray just isn’t worth the effort almost double dvd prices and not much better quality. Seriously let down by Sony on both fronts.

The prices have now come down even further! I was still thinking that £300 was a little bit too high but I checked out the Buying Cheap web site and they are showing prices as low as £279.99:

It’s time to give in to temptation for me

Hi Mark, thanks for dropping by and making a comment, the reason for the delay is that I need to approve people’s first comment to prevent getting a whole load of spam on the site.
Your comments should appear straight away from now on.
I believe you’re correct on the non-PS2 compatibility – http://www.zath.co.uk/new-ps3-80gb/
Cheers!

The PS3 being only £279.99, makes it one of the cheapest Blu-Ray player’s and the fact it is a HD games console means it’s a great piece of technology at a good price.
Sure the PS3 needs some more games but all in due time. Also PS3 Home is going to be a great feature aswell.

Hi all i have just turned 40 and want to put you all in pespecive here. Okay here goes…. xmas 1979 all i wanted was a atari 2600 console. luckly i did get one with two games… spaceinvaders came with it and another bought for me called outlaw…okay. The console was £160.00 and the games were at least £30 each if you was lucky.. see where i’m coming from chaps? £160 in 1979 was a mortgauge on its own…. a games console today for £300 and games ranging from £30 to £50 are peanuts… so come on its a steal..

My xbox has just died on me. It has stopped reading the disks. I think it’s time to invest in the PS3!
