Carphone Warehouse Buy Tiscali To Become Broadband Leader
As you can imagine the broadband industry is a big market – one that currently has around 15 million ‘users’ and that is a number that is rapidly expanding, so when two of the top five providers come together it is definitely worth looking at.
Carphone Warehouse (or more specifically ‘Talk Talk’, the telecommunications part of the company) is set to be the biggest provider of Broadband access in the UK after a £236 million buy-out of Tiscali’s UK arm, assuming EU competition regulators give it the green light.
The current top five are BT, Virgin, Carphone Warehouse, Sky Broadband and Tiscali, but the 1.45million users that the Carphone Warehouse will gain on 30th June when the deal is set to be completed will see them leapfrog both BT and Virgin into the top-spot.
However as big a number as £236 million sounds it is less than half the price that they were looking for when they started trying to find a buyer last year, and is only around half of what Carphone Warehouse had previously offered; this is all down to the Italian companies growing debts which are now well over £750million.
Although many current Tiscali users may be worried about disruption a spokesman from the buyer said that broadband and e-mail accounts will continue to work as normal, and that in the long run they will be able to benefit from a more efficient service.
In fact Carphone Warehouse are currently in the process of upgrading its network to allow for more capacity – something that is a necessity as increased usage, more users and more demand for bandwidth intensive services such as BBC iPlayer put strain on the ISPs.
