Car Insurance for Women

I recently wrote about getting cheap car insurance online having bought my last 3 car insurance policies online. I have to say that I’m pretty happy with buying my policy online, but what about car insurance for a woman?

In recent years there seems to have been quite a few specific companies targeting the ‘car insurance for women’ sector of the market, these are usually very apparent given their style of marketing campaign, for example Diamond or Sheila’s Wheels.

I’ve often wondered if these style of adverts and approach to car insurance actually persuade you to buy from them as they are very different from the norm in some cases – some would put me off completely, but then I’m a guy. Are you a woman who has bought her car insurance from one of these companies, do you prefer to organise your car insurance online? Do you respond well the the style of advertising and approach these companies take?

The reason why I’m asking is because after I read the following press release (admittedly from Swiftcover) about car insurance for a woman not actually being that competitive from some of these supposedly female-focussed companies, it really got me thinking as I know my sister seems to love Diamond car insurance and yet I’ve not been convinced by the prices – in fact some of the price differences can be huge!

All I can say is that I’ll definitely be recommending that my sister at least gets a quote from Swiftcover when her car insurance renewal comes around, at these typical price differences of between £145 and £600 on average, you owe it to yourself and your bank balance to get a Swiftcover quote! – You can get a further £25 off any quote by reading my Cheap Car Insurance Online page.

Are you paying over the odds as a woman? What kind of saving can you make? How do you feel about these “female-friendly” advertising campaigns?

Women paying over the odds on car insurance

The UK’s 18.9 million women drivers face price differences on their car insurance premiums of as much as £600 a year according to new research from online car insurer, swiftcover.com.

Car insurance companies like Sheila’s Wheels and Diamond target women through female-friendly advertising campaigns but when it comes down to hard cash, it seems they are not always as competitive as other insurers.

swiftcover.com, which was voted the cheapest car insurance provider in 2007 by www.moneysupermarket.com, looked at how much women would pay per year with a number of motor insurance brands online. In order to provide a balanced picture, four examples of women were chosen to show a range of ages, locations, car makes/models, occupations and driving histories.

The most that any of the women would pay was a whopping £944.45 a year with Diamond, £612.69 more expensive than the £331.76 quoted by swiftcover.com. Across all four examples, even the smallest average saving with swiftcover.com was over £145.

Tina Shortle, marketing director of swiftcover.com, made the following comments: “Statistically, women have been shown to cause less accidents than men, which means their premiums should be much lower but even we were surprised in the difference between what they could be charged. Our message to all drivers, both men and women, is to shop around – and certainly not to settle for your renewal premium until you have made sure it is competitive.”

Unfortunately guys, it’s a fact of life. Women are better drivers than men. OK, well maybe not better drivers overall but they certainly have fewer costly car accidents than male drivers and therefore the premiums for Women’s Car Insurance are usually lower than men’s. If you have a man in the house with whom you share a vehicle, putting yourself down as the named driver will lower the car insurance costs for the whole household, as he will still be covered while the premiums will reflect the fact that the women’s name is the first on the policy.
There are many insurers out there who appeal to women drivers but whatever you are looking for from your car insurance, remember to shop around. While the policies offered by specialist companies might be cheap, they may not be the cheapest out there. Using a price comparison website is the quickest and easiest way to see what is available and find the insurance policy that is right for you.

The great thing about car insurance is that there is so much competition that the carriers are willing to bend over backwards to give you a free quote. This is ultimately important in trying to get the best rates on your car insurance.
