Has the time finally come to buy a (cheap) PS3? Well that’s the question I’m now asking myself after having simply written off the Sony Playstation 3 as a bad job ever since it was released – a good, well equipped device, but one that has some definite flaws, namely the online gaming aspect and perhaps the biggest of which being the substantially higher price in comparison to its competitors.
First of all, I will admit that as much as I like the idea of playing games and being a “gamer” like I was when I was a kid, these days I don’t seem to get that much chance to play games and as such always have a backlog, some of which in currently include Bioshock, Half Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, GTA 4 and Spore. Getting another console, even if it’s a cheap Playstation 3 probably wouldn’t help this situation neither.
In addition to the time aspect, I’m someone who has always gravitated to PC gaming more than playing on consoles (I think it’s due to my uncoordinated hands having problems with using controllers instead of mouse/keyboard), regardless of the fact that I’ve owned most of the big name consoles in the past 15 years.
I think one of my problems is that I normally end up wanting to play just a small number of titles on any one console platform and therefore the consoles can easily go months between being played on, I’m now only about to use my Xbox 360 again for the first time since Christmas because I’ve got Street Fighter 4 and Civilization Revolution on their way to me.
So you might now be thinking, why on earth am I now looking to buy a PS3, yet another console that will rarely get played on? Well there are a few exclusive games that I would like to play on the PS3 (Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune) and also the fact that it is still a very powerful little box of tricks which would work very well given the following – I’m very tempted to upgrade our current 720p Samsung LE32R74BDX 32″ LCD TV to a new 1080p Samsung LED TV which I’ve recently been very impressed by having seen one running with a Blu-Ray movie playing on it.
Right there is one of the main attractions in the PS3 for me – the Blu-Ray movie playback facility – I’m a big movie fan, but have always wanted to avoid buying into another physical movie format after having spent far too much money on DVDs in the past – ideally I just want high definition (1080p) movie downloads that you can buy in a similar way to that of music now.
However, given that the HD movie downloads don’t appear to be on the horizon anytime soon, should I just bite the bullet and buy a PS3 if I upgrade my TV to watch some good looking Blu-Ray movies and then also be able to play a few games?
What do you think to the Sony PS3? Does it have enough saving graces to make it a worthwhile purchase despite its flaws? Is the time now right for you to buy one for yourself?
