I agree with James that it is better to get a game delayed by the developers than having an unfinished product. Some game developers are just in a hurry to put their product to the market earliest due to competion and also to make profits early. However, these products are full of bugs and glitches.

I have worked as a programmer at a couple video game companies and it is definitely always a battle between what the publishers and programmers want. The publishers will often set ridiculous timelines or change things around suddenly. An unfinished product might get shipped early so that it can make some artificial deadline. This unfortunately still happens very often.

Those all sound awful, and it’s too bad, because that looks like a pretty sweet game, and it must have looked even sweeter back then.

[...] Perhaps we should applaud their dedication, especially given that there are so many (lazy?) games developers out there, who you would think from the finished product (or sometimes it’s not even that) that they don’t have any pride in their work. Although, that’s perhaps a little unfair on developers, they are often at the mercy of the publishers, who just want to get the game out onto the shelves regardless of whether it is finished, as was the case with the Elite game, Frontier: First Encounters when it went bad!
I remember Elite 2 on my trusty Amiga.... I never knew there was a thrid one though. It was probably the biggest game I have ever played and it fitted on floppy discs!!

An online version sounds amazing. Especially if it could keep growing with new planets and things. The possibilities are endless.
