BenQ LED Eco Monitors Released For Under £100

benq-led-eco-monitorAs we near the Copenhagen conference the glare of public interest is shifting from the financially deprived recession to the environmentally deprived globe, and yet again eco warriors are back on the agenda – so what better time to release some LED monitors that fit nicely into both categories?

The snappily named BenQ G920WL and G922HDL (yes, that is sarcasm!) both line themselves up as the eco-option which I’m sure will prove popular, and the same can be said for the pricing, but let’s have a look at the specs first.

The only real difference between the two is the size of them: the G920WL is the larger of the two and weighs in with and 19 inch screen, 16:10 ration and 1440 x 900 WXGA+ resolution whilst the ever so slightly smaller G922HDL is 18.5 inches and thus has a 16:9 ration with a slightly diminished resolution of 1366 x 768.

That is not to say that the latter is in any way poor, but as you will see in a bit I’m not quite sure why you would go for it. Obviously they both benefit significantly from the LCD technology that they utilise which as with most other monitors leave the LCD type behind: they have a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 which will give you more than enough deep blacks and bright whites to keep your eyes entertained for hours. Obviously these LED monitors, much like the Samsung LED TVs still use LCD technology, but are backlit using LEDs.

You also get the benefits of extra detail, and the “capability to promptly address the lighting changes” with the result that “every image detail is perfectly rendered with optimised colour brightness performance without light leakage”. Obviously that’s very easy to say, and the little pictures you see on your own screen hardly do the comparisons justice, but it’s probably safe to assume that the quality will be very high.

Another nice touch (but one that is slightly overrated) is the instant-on capabilities which means everything is picture ready as soon as you turn it on, which of course is very nice but I can’t think of a situation where you would actually need that, but there you go!

The last little but of technology it has to show off (before we move onto its environmental credentials) is the BenQ Senseye Human Vision Technology. Once you’ve navigated your way through the wealth of jargon and emotive language you’ll find that this is essentially a collection of six proprietary calibration techniques allowing you to make the best of your monitor in a range of situations: Standard, Movie, Game, sRGB and Eco Mode.

By manipulating the six key areas (comfortable, clear, clean, detailed, brilliant and balanced) this system should make your viewing all the more pleasurable; or environmentally friendly if you are that way inclined.

Finally we have the actual eco credentials. Claiming to have the lowest power consumption in their respective size categories (which considering the fact that one of the two is the only 18.5 inch monitor that I’m aware of is marginally less impressive!), supposedly reducing consumption by 36% from ‘traditional’ monitors. Whether that’s “old school” CRT traditional or LED I don’t know, but either way you will also go some way to lowering your electricity bill as well as saving the planet!

Added to that the fact that these BenQ LED monitors are mercury free and you have a pretty nice package – especially considering the £99 and £95 price tags that the 19” and 18.5” offerings have. Personally I would always go for the former (£4 for that extra half an inch isn’t too bad), but regardless you are pretty much onto a winner with these two as they don’t look to bad either!

You can get a 22″ 1080p ASUS monitor from amazon for not a lot more than this. Nice though.
