BBC To Show All Content In HD By April 2011
There seems to have been an extraordinary lag time in the transition between standard and high definition TV when it comes to the British terrestrial channels; but now, just like London buses they’re all coming at once and according to an official statement from the BBC, all TV shows will be delivered to our HDTV’s in their optimum high definition quality by April of next year.
To achieve their goal they have asked that all shows made for any of their channels by a third party to be filmed in high definition by that time. In addition to that, come September of this year they will have added a second HD channel, BBC One HD, to their line-up so they are fully prepared for the onslaught of HD content in the run up to Easter 2011.
Originally the BBC planned to make this shift by the early part of 2010, but as Brits we get used to constant delays in all walks of life: Wembley, check-in at Heathrow, the M6, the list goes on, but in the traditional British spirits we will queue up, wait patiently and have a good moan about it all.
However, there have been some fairly good excuses for the delays this time around. For example, the producers of EastEnders claim that in order to properly make the transition they need a major touch up of all the sets so they don’t look ridiculous as the detail is improved. And yes, that’s about as good as the excuses get.
But still, lots more BBC HD content is better late than never, especially with other terrestrial channels such as ITV HD, Channel 4 HD and Five HD – I suppose considering the BBC’s public funding is due to be slashed like everything else thanks to David Cameron and his right-hand man, we should thank our lucky stars that they’re not being cut back into black and white!

About time, I guess all the talk about 3D TV just around the corner has speeded up the BBC rolling out all channels in HD. Coast in HD should be pretty good.
