Steve Jobs has just announced the new Apple iPad 2, the second generation of what is already the most popular tablet device in the world with over 90% market share.
The new generation includes much rumoured features such as front and rear facing cameras, as well as faster hardware, whilst becoming even thinner than the first generation.
New accessories have also been shown off for the latest generation model, delivering features such as HDMI out. Want to see what else is new in Apple’s latest and greatest tablet? Carry on reading, there’s much more where that came from!
The device features the brand new A5 dual core processor, which is not only twice as fast, but also has 9 times faster graphics. As expected, the device also has both front and rear facing cameras for capturing photos and getting in on some of that FaceTime action your iPhone 4 has been so fond of the past few months. All of this is encased in an exterior thinner than the first generation model, if you can believe that! It’s also thinner than the iPhone 4, which is pretty insane.
In addition to the improved hardware, you can now get the iPad 2 in both black and white, with both colours shipping from day one! None of the waiting you still have with the white iPhone 4, which is always good news.
The battery life on the new generation is the same 10 hours that 1st generation users have become accustomed to. Considering the thinner profile of the updated device, as well as the more powerful hardware, to keep battery life at 10 hours is a great achievement.
In addition to the new generation tablet, Apple has also announced the availability of some new accessories to go with your new purchase.
There will be a HDMI output adaptor available, which can output to 1080p, mirroring whatever you have on your screen. It works with all existing applications, no changes have to be made from the developer’s side as far as we can tell, and it also supports rotation. The great thing about the adaptor is that it has two ports, one for charging and one for output, so you can still output to a HDMI device whilst charging at the same time.
Apple has also released Smart Covers, which is a super thin case that wraps around the device, keeping a low profile so not to add any unnecessary weight. It aligns itself with magnets, so it’s flush with the iPad, and your iPad automatically goes to sleep when the cover is closed, waking up when you open the cover again. The polyurethane version is available for $39, with a leather version costing $69.
Pricing and Availability
The pricing remains at the same level as the current generation, which is great to see for users who are buying the new model. If you want to get your hands on the iPad 2, you can do so from March 25th in the UK. Those in the USA are getting it two weeks earlier, with a March 11th release date.
