Amazon Kindle 2 Release In UK & Europe?
A few weeks ago we brought you news of the Amazon Kindle 2 release, the new electronic book reader from Amazon which was the successor to the very successful Kindle. However this didn’t mean an awful lot to us UK dwellers because despite the Kindle’s success we haven’t even seen a glimpse of it this side of the Atlantic.
Due to several reasons the Kindle has not come to UK, Europe or anywhere else outside of USA, and the Amazon Kindle 2 looked set to continue this trend. However when iFixit got hold of it they tore it apart (or rather they disassembled it) and had a look at what was inside: and to their surprise there was what looked like a space for a SIM card.
“Wow” I can hear you all sarcastically sighing, “What’s so amazing about that?” Let me explain. Currently the Kindle links up to Amazon’s Whispernet (where you can download the books, magazines and newspapers) using Sprint’s EVDO network and although this is fine in America here in Europe they are pretty rare so there was no sense in having the Kindle over here.
But by using a SIM card you could potentially connect to the Whispernet using GSM or HSPDA which would be suitable for use in Europe. The presence of an unused SIM card slot lends itself to the idea that Amazon are hoping to bring the Kindle to Europe, and hopefully that is the case because the Kindle 2 definitely looks like a nice little gadget.
Unfortunately this is my no means fact, and it could just be a left over from the design process, but I’m sure that unless you are a pessimist you will be at least a little exited by the idea of seeing the Amazon Kindle 2 here in the UK – I know I would be the first in the queue!
UPDATE: Amazon have now announced that it is now making it available to buy the Kindle 2 for customers in the UK and Europe from its US-based site – so you can now buy the Amazon Kindle from Amazon.com!

why can’t we just link to wireless hotspot and download from Amazon. Why complicate with a sim?

My feelings exactly Mike, I cannot understand why this system would be preferred over having wireless access, surely this must add to the cost of the device? I think I’d prefer less connectivity, but a cheaper device I can load up with ebooks even if it’s less often and tied to finding a wifi hotspot.
