Since the birth of the ‘Smartphone’ it seems more and more manufacturers, who would be more associated to consumer electronics, specifically computers. However, manufacturers such as ASUS and Apple have begun manufacturing mobile devices such as the NaviPhone and obviously the iPhone.
Even Dell have produced a large screen mobile phone (or small tablet depending on your point of view) with the Dell Streak, well now it’s Acer’s turn, and their Android based ‘Stream’ now has an official price and release date.
The Acer ‘Stream’ will be sold, initially; exclusively from UK-based online retailer eXpansys and in terms of hardware it is certainly impressive.
The Stream will feature the increasingly common 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7” AMOLED screen, a 5-megapixel camera and 720p video recording. In terms of connectivity there is HDMI output and full DLNA/UPnP support for streaming your media.
It has all the traditional Android touch-sensitive buttons at the bottom of the device, and is actually a decent looking phone with a contrast of metallic silver case with a glossy black border surrounding the screen. For an operating system there is Android, but currently only 2.1 (Éclair) with no news of an update to Android 2.2 (Froyo).
The phone is due for release on the 9th August this year, and will be retailed by eXpansys for £399. Also, with it currently being exclusive to the online retailer, there is no option for a bundled contract and the phone will have to be purchased handset only without a subsidised price unfortunately.
